2 Chronicles 20: 3-4 (NLT)
Jehoshaphat was terrified by this news and begged the LORD for guidance. He also ordered everyone in Judah to begin fasting. So people from all the towns of Judah came to Jerusalem to seek the LORD’s help.
What is your natural reaction to fear? Most of us have heard of the fight, flight, or freeze response. Which one are you? Many of us probably wish we were the fighter in times of fear. That’s the one out of the three that projects the most strength, right? However, the reality is that most of us are either flight or freeze. We tend to run when afraid or freeze in a scary situation. Just watch any horror film or action thriller when danger arises. Even the person who acts like they want to fight ends up running or clamping up in the face of adversity. Have you considered that there could be one more “F” as a response to fear? Fast! Weird, right?
King Jehoshaphat of Judah was faced with the destruction of his people in 2 Chronicles 20. Three armies were combining to attack God’s people. He claims they are powerless against this army (2 Chronicles 20:12), so they can’t fight. They can’t run away from the land that was promised to them. If they freeze, they die. When it seems like there is no other option, out of Jehoshaphat arises an unusual option. Why don’t we fast and beseech the God who called us, saved us, and has protected us in the past?
Notice, being the chosen people of God, in the chosen place of God, Jehoshaphat did not see prayer as the singular greatest thing he could do to allow space for God to operate on his behalf. Fasting is a holy response to fear. Fasting is a symbol of faith, and without faith it is impossible to please God. (Hebrews 11:6). Fasting is indeed a weapon, useful in the fight against fear that comes from the enemy. This is a message to the enemy that you know how to win against him, and that fight belongs to him. You fly into the arms of a God who will protect you when you fast. You freeze by standing still in a fast to see the salvation of the Lord (Exodus 14:13).
